Biography

Deborah Champion, the daughter of Thomas Champion and Hannah Brockway, was born in Lyme, Connecticut, on April 26, 1697.[1][2][3]

She married Ebenezer Johnson of Norwich, Connecticut, in Norwich on October 29, 1717.[1][4] Ebenezer died April 13, 1779.[5] Children, born in Norwich:

  1. Deborah Johnson, born September 13, 1718.[6]
  2. Hannah Johnson, born December 31, 1720.[7]
  3. Susannah Johnson, born July 7, 1723.[8]
  4. Isaac Johnson, born February 9, 1726; died May 2, 1727.[9]
  5. Isaac Johnson, 2nd, born March 24, 1728.[10]
  6. Ebenezer Johnson, born February 25, 1730-1.[11]

Research Notes

  • Probably not the "Deborah Champion" who married Samuel Mather: The Champion Genealogy explains why Deborah was probably not the "Deborah Champion" who married Samuel Mather:
"The marriage of Deborah, daughter of __ Champion and Samuel Mather 1 Jan. 1711-2, is recorded at Lyme, but no record of the birth of any Champions who would correspond to her has been found. Since Samuel Mather was born 23 Jan. 1683, it would seem that Deborah could not have been a daughter of the Settler. It is also improbable that she was Deborah, who would have been but a little over fifteen years of age at the date of the marriage and fourteen years younger than her husband, and is recorded to have been married to Ebenezer Johnson in 1718."[1]
Furthermore, Samuel Mather's Lyme marriage record does not appear to actually give Deborah's last name: "Samuell, m. Deborah [ ], Jan. 1, 1711/12."[16]Also, Samuel Mather died in 1725, after Deborah's 1717 marriage to Ebenezer Johnson.[17]

The Champion Genealogy cited here as the source indicates that she married Ebenezer Johnson, as the heirs of Thomas Champion included Ebenezer Johnson and Deborah his wife.

The same source notes the Lyme record of the 1 January 1711/2 marriage to Samuel Mather of "Deborah Champion, daughter of _____ Champion," but points out that this woman would have been short of her 15th birthday on that date and 14 years younger than Samuel Mather.

It looks like further research is needed here.
