Obituary
"Beyond the River." Auburn News and Granville Electorate Gazetteer (NSW : 1903 - 1905) 17 September 1904: 2. Web. 25 Nov 2019 <http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article240067863>.
Beyond the River.
After being bed-ridden for 10 years, Mrs. Elizabeth Barker peacefully passed away, at the residence of her daughter, (Mrs. T. Spence), Cumberland-road, Auburn, on Monday, 29th August.
The deceased was born at Newington Salt Pans, in 1818, her parents being Mr. and Mrs. Champion, who removed to Parramatta when deceased was but a child of -.
After a happy childhood, this young daughter became the bride of Mr. William Barker, who, having wended his way from Wales, had settled in the historic borough. The outcome of this union was 6 children, viz.,—
Mr. H. Barker, Petersham,
Mrs. J. Lewis, Redfern,
Mr. J. Barker, Sydney,
Mrs. Bingham, Summer Hill,
Mr. W. Barker, Redfern,
Mrs. T. Spence, Auburn.
In addition, to the living of the above there are many grandchildren left to mourn for the departed.
The late Mrs. Barker was the eldest of a family of 13, and the last surviving sister of the original family there are but three (brothers) left.
For 22 years the deceased has been a widow and for 20 years of that time has resided with Mr. and Mrs. T. Spence, who bestowed every care and attention on the afflicted one. Messrs. W. Metcalfe & Co., (Parramatta), provided a very nice turnout for the funeral, which took place on the 31st ultimo, the remains being last to rest in the orthodox form by the Rev. F. C. Williams, in the C. E. cemetery, Rookwood.
A very old friend of the family, in the person of the Rev. minister of the Paddington Presbyterian Church, joined to the sad procession at the cemetery. Many condolence cards and beautiful wreaths &c. were sent by a large circle sympathising friends. Among the contributions we noticed a handsome harp composed of white flowers from Mr. Wormley and family, a beautiful wreath of white hyacinths and violets from Mr. Reid, and one composed of violets and frieshures from Mrs. Malmgron. Others forwarding wreaths were Mrs. Cracknell, and Mr. and Mrs. Eield and family, Mrs. Lewis and family, Mrs. Hunter and family, and Mrs. Keane and family.

Bring flowers, pale flowers o'er the bier to shed,
A crown for the brow of the aged dead,
For this through its leaves hath the wild rose burst,
For this in the woods was the violet nursed;
Though they smile in vain for what once was ours,
They are loves last gift—bring ye flowers, pale.
