Biography

Hester Chandler was born at Newbury, Massachusetts on January 28, 1651/2, daughter of William and Mary (Fowler) Chandler. [1] [2] [3]

Hester, then of Andover, Massachusetts, married Jonathan Gage of Rowley on November 12, 1667. [4] [2] Jonathan was born about 1643, son of John and Amy (___) Gage. [5] [6]

Jonathan died March 15, 1674/5 at Bradford, Massachusetts. [7] [6] [3]

His estate inventory was taken March 22, and testified to by widow Hester Gage. [8] On March 30, 1675, the court appointed Francis Wainwright to sell the land and pay bills, and be helpful to the widow. [9]

After paying those debts submitted, Francis Wainwright resigned his administration, and on March 28, 1676, widow Hester Gage was granted administration of the remaining estate, being mostly land. [9]

Widow Hester Gage then married John Wilson of Elizabethtown, New Jersey about 1675. [3]

On March 4, 1679/80, John Wilson of Elizabethtown, signed a power of attorney, so that his wife Esther could sell Bradford, Massachusetts property of her late husband, as executrix of his estate. [3] A deed rwas ecorded with the Ipswich Deeds, Vol. 4:page 333. [6]

Esther was in Massachusetts in 1680 to complete the property sale and on May 17, 1680, Esther Wilson, aged 28, was called to testify in the witch trial of Mrs. Elizabeth Morse. Esther stated that while caring for her stepmother during a prolonged illness, she would call out that 'Goody Morse was a witch'. Esther's father William Chandler was forced to testify, indicated during his wife's illness she often 'out of her head'. [3]

At some point the couple returned to New England and resided at Bristol, Rhode Island, where daughter Naomi married. [3]

John Wilson died at Bristol by June 10, 1695. [3]

Esther was living at Bristol, when the horse of Esther Wilson, widow, and that of her son-in-law Stephen Bedford were mentioned on June 4, 1696. [3] [10]
