Biography

Grandmother: Elizabeth Guest Evans

Parents: Thomas Chandler and Margaret Evans

Siblings: William Guest Chandler and Thomas Chandler

Elizabeth Margaret Chandler was born the 24th of December 1807, in Centre, Delaware, to Thomas Chandler and Margaret Evans. [1] [2] [3]

Elizabeth's mother died when Elizabeth was an infant, and her father, Thomas, who was at the time farming in Centre, took his family to Philadelphia, where he practiced medicine and the chidren's grandmother, Elizabeth Evans was at hand to help care for them. When Thomas died about 1816, Elizabeth Evans continued to raise her granddaughter Elizabeth Chandler. Elizabeth Evans, in her turn died in 1827.[2]

Elizabeth is described as having been lively, yet even and calm.[2] She was bright and quick to pick up on things. She attended Quaker schools until about age 12 or 13, and was doted upon by her aunts, Ruth, Jane, and Amelia Evans, as much as she was by her grandmother, Elizabeth.[2]

She showed a talent in poetic composition at a young age.[2] This led to her being one of the first female writers to make anti slavery one of the core themes of her writing.[1] A collection of her works, "The Poetical Works of Elizabeth Margaret Chandler", compiled by Benjamin Lundy, can be read in several places, including Archive.org. Lundy compiled it after her death.[1]

In 1830, Elizabeth, her aunt and her brother, moved to Lenawee County, Michigan, where her brother purchased land and farmed. Elizabeth continued her writing and editing and formed the Logan Female Anti-Slavery Society.[2]

Elizabeth died from remittance fever on November 2, 1834 at the young age of 26 (almost 27) and was buried near the family farm in Michigan.[1][3] It does not appear that she ever married nor had children.
