In 1775, when his Loyalist sympathies became evident, he was placed under guard in North Haven. In 1779, his son William aided a British invasion on New Haven, and the family withdrew with the British, forfeiting Joshua's considerable property. The family lived in Long Island until the British withdrawl to Nova Scotia. In the autumn of 1782, Joshua Chandler accepted an appointment as Agent for the Settlers in Nova Scotia for the loyalist refugees of Long Island's Queens County.
Joshua's wife Sarah (Miles) Chandler died only weeks after arriving in Annapolis.
