John Fish Chandler was a son of Freeman Chandler and his wife Esther. He was born about 1829 in Maine.
The 1850 U.S. Census recorded Freeman Chandler, age 49 and a farmer, in New London Township, Henry County, Iowa. Other household members were Estill Chandler, female, age 53; John Chandler, 21; Freeman Chandler, 20; Esther Ann Chandler, 19; and Olive F Chandler, 9. All household members were born in Maine except for Olive, who was born in Ohio.[1]
The 1860 U.S. Census recorded Freeman Chansler, age 58 and a farmer, in Springfield Township (Cuba post office), Allen County, Indiana, with Esther Chansler, age 60, John Chansler, age 30, and Olive Chansler, age 18. Albion and Esther were recorded as born in Maine, while John and Olive were born in Ohio. Esther was indicated to be insane, but it is possible that this indication was intended for John, who was 30 years old and had no listed occupation. [2]
