Fred was born in Grand Blanc, Michigan in 1863 to George Chapel and Mary Gage. His father was a farmer with a total of eight children to date.[1][2] He graduated from the University of Michigan, School of Pharmacy in 1885. Fred and Inie were married on July 19, 1892 in Petoskey, Michigan.[3] Fred ran his own pharmacy in downtown Charlevoix, and Inie was a freelance newspaper writer and mother of two boys.[4][5] Sadly, Wilfred died in 1911 of tuberculosis. His family sold the business and moved to Portland, Oregon.[6][7] Fred died in 1921 in Portland, Oregon.[8][9]
Notes
The gene pool must have been small in their corner of Michigan. Fred's mother, Mary Jane Gage, was Inie's cousin, and Inie's parents were first cousins. They were all descended from a Revolutionary War hero, Joshua Gage.[10]
Of Fred's seven siblings, the boys all found wives and had children, but the women all remained single.
