Native American Ancestry

In the early 1900s, many descendants of his son John Elmore Chappell submitted an Eastern Cherokee application stating that Drury had Eastern Cherokee ancestry.[9]

In his application, his grandson Joseph Chappell wrote:

“I think I have heard of the Chickasas and have heard talk of the Choctaws. ... My grandfather [Drury] spoke the Indian language some.”[10]

E.W. Easley, a witness for Joseph, wrote:

“I also knew his father Dru Chappell when I was a boy. He was called and said to be an Indian and had that appearance. He lived in Hickman County and was a farmer and hunter.”[10]

In her application, Amanda S. Christian, a granddaughter of Drury's sister Charlotte, wrote:

"[My grandmother Charlotte Chappell] was half-blood; her father was full-blood.[11] Dru Chappell was my grandmother's brother."[12]

While their Eastern Cherokee applications were rejected, their testimonies suggest that the Chappells may have Native American ancestry.

Research Notes

  • Ansel and Hansel Chappell also had land grants in Hickman, TN in the 1830s.[13]
  • Based on the 1850 census, Drury may have a third wife as unsure whom the mother is for Mary (b. 1838) and Annah (b. 1839). His wife Sally was likely deceased before 1830 as she is not represented in the 1830 census. He did not marry Rebecca until 1840.
  • While his parents suggested are Drury Chappell (Chappell-645) and Elizabeth, I have not found a source that connects him to these parents. When you review Chappell-645, it states: "Nothing further is known of him, and it is probable that he died young and unmarried, for the name has not been perpetuated in the family. He was, as far as is known, the first and last Drury Chappell."
  • We would like to know more about Drury's life in North Carolina. Are there land records, tax records, court minute accounts, etc.?
