Joseph was born in Newbury, Massachusetts, in 1741, the son of Thomas [1]
He removed to Canterbury, New Hampshire, about 1762, where he was the first physician to practice in the town. [2] He also used his medical skills during the Revolutionary War, serving as a surgeon's mate under Col. Stark at Bunker Hill in 1775.[3]
He married Mehitable Fry in 1765.[4] The couple later moved to Fryeburg, Maine.[5] Josiah accidentally drowned in the Saco River in 1796. He is buried at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Fryeburg.[6]
