Biography

Joseph was a Friend (Quaker)

Joseph was born on 3 Sep 1747 in The Oblong, Dutchess, New York Colony.[1] He was the son of Daniel Chase and Hannah (Tallman) Chase.[1]

He married Alice Reynolds, daughter of Henry and Mary Reynolds of Beekman, on 9d 3m 1768 [9 Mar 1768] in The Oblong, Dutchess, New York.[2]

Joseph's wife Alice was received on certificate at the Easton monthly meeting on 28d 5m 1789 [28 May 1789].[3] She was accompanied by her children Joseph, Artimus, Mary, Phebe, Cinthia, and Sarah.[3] Joseph Sr. was not present, implying that he died prior to 1789.[3]

The following is from W. Bronson Taylor's Stories and Pictures of Providence Saratoga County, NY:[4]

"In 1797 the list of men who worked the roads gives a fairly accurate list of all family names in the ares...the road districts will, to some extent, indicate the location of each family. The number after each name probably indicates the number of days worked by the individual.
District No. 10
Joseph Chase 6
Lamuel Chase 6"

Notes

  • Quaker Calendar - There has been much confusion over the dates in Quaker records. Friends used numbered months and days rather than what they considered pagan names for them (i.e. "Thursday" coming from "Thor's Day"). Thus, when the secular calendar was changed in 1752, making January the first month instead of March, Friends began calling January "First Month".

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
