Biography

1776 Project
Moody Chase served with Middlesex County Militia, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.

Moody Chase was born at Sutton or Littleton, Massachusetts on September 23, 1723, [1]son of Daniel and Sarah (March) Chase. [2] [3]

He married Elizabeth Hale of Sutton on January 17, 1748. [2] [4] Elizabeth was born at Bradford, Massachusetts on September 25, 1730 [5], daughter of Jonathan and Susannah (Tuttle) Hale.

Elizabeth's father Jonathan Hale of Sutton, wrote his will on August 27, 1768, and in it he named daughter Elizabeth Chase, among others. [6]

In November, 1768, Moody and Elizabeth Chase, were among the heirs of Jonathan Hale, submitting their satisfaction and approval of Jonathan's submitted will. [6]

Moody was a resident of Sutton until after the births of all his children (twelve in number). [2]

The Rev. Dr. Wheelock engaged Moody to survey and clear the land for his Indian school in Hanover, NH, the site of the current Dartmouth College. [3] [2]

His family removed to Groton, Massachusetts (now Shirley) where he remained until his death. [2]

He died on April 27, 1815 [7] and is buried in the Center Cemetery, Shirley, Massachusetts. [2] [8]

His will was dated August 19, 1814, appointing Joshua Langley executor, however Joshua died prior to execution of the estate, and on May 26, 1815, widow Elizabeth, Jaocb, Mary, Judith and March Chase petitioned to have john Walton of Pepperell appointed as administrator. [9] In his will he names:

  • wife Elizabeth
  • daughter Mary
  • daughter Judith
  • daughter Susanna Gould
  • daughter Elizabeth Sargent
  • son Jacob Chase
  • son March Chase
  • grandson Jonathan, son of my son William Chase, deceased
  • grand children, Lydia, Elizabeth, Samuel, Moody and William, children of my son Samuel Chase, deceased
  • children of my son March Chase, being Elizabeth, Mary, Susan and Celina [9]

The estate inventory was submitted on May 17, 1815 and assessed at $2891. 51 with the homestead in Shirley valued at $2550.00 and 25 acres at Harvard valued at $50.00. [9]

His debts, including a mortgage, several notes and funeral charges were in the amount of $ 2109.00, submitted by administrator John Walton on May 29, 1815. In addition there were taxes due and administrative charges, as well as the widows allowance of $100. 00 that exceeded the estate value. His estate was found insufficient by the amount of $92.49. The court ordered a sale of the personal items included in the estate. [9]

On March 20, 1816, the court further ordered John Walton to conduct an auction of sufficient real estate of Moody Chase to raise the sum of $1105.96 to cover remaining debts. [9]

His widow on died November 4, 1820. [2] [10] [7]

He owned and occupied a farm on the eastern bank of Nashua river. [2]
