Sources show that this person was NOT related to Jean Chastain (Jean de Chasteigner) and Jeanne de Villers. He was not part of the de Chasteigner family. Therefore, the profile has been disconnected from their profiles. Please do not reattach them.

Sources show that Jean de Chasteigner and Jeanne de Villers-Saint-Paul, members of the noble Chasteigner family, had no son named Etienne. Further, it has been established that Etienne Chastain, grandfather of Pierre-Louis Chastain, was a notary in Bourges. it is highly unlikely that the second son of a noble family would have taken such a profession. See Research Notes section for details.

Sources show that this person was NOT related to François Chasteigner (François de Chasteigner) and Louise de Laval. He was not part of the de Chasteigner family. Therefore, the profile has been disconnected from their profiles. Please do not reattach them.

Sources show that François de Chasteigner and Jeanne de Laval had only one son, who was named René. François de Chasteigner also had two natural sons, neither was named Etienne, neither could have been a notary in Bourges. See above.

Research notes

Sources below concern the Chasteigner family. They do not concern Estienne Chastain, who was not part of this family.

Available sources:

All three sources list the following five children (one son, four daughters) for Jean Chasteigner and Jeanne de Villers:

  1. François Chasteigner, seigneur de Saint-Georges de Rexe

No mention of a son named Etienne or Estienne. Daughters are mentioned, which means a younger married son would have been listed, especially if he had a descendance. Also, a younger son would have been given a fief, or otherwise have gone into orders; he would not have become a notary.

Profile has been disconnected from Chasteignier-1 and de Laval-1 - they had only one son, René, see http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k56988962/f81.image

François Chasteigner also had natural children, but none could be this Estienne Chastain.

Profile has been disconnected from Chastain-575 and Villers-111. See details on profile.
The information on his great-grandson Pierre Chastain hints that his name is indeed Chastain, and they are in fact *not* descendants of the Chasteigner family. Etienne should be disconnected from his parents. They had no son named Etienne, and this Etienne's parents are not known. So the arms have no reason of being the Chasteigner arms linked below. I can't tell about the coat of arms on this page.
IF the parentage of this person is correct, then :

- his actual family name was de Chasteigner

- the coat of arms above is wrong. Here are the arms of the Chasteigner family.
