Biography

Obediah was born in about 1790. He passed away in about 1830 in McMinn County, Tennessee. Some theorize he was the son of Abraham Chastain (1765–1848) and Sarah Coward (1773–1830), as well as the grandson of Rev. James Chastain (1740–1819). However, others have theorized he may instead have been the son of Rev. James Chastain. Either way, Obediah Chastain was a descendant of Pierre Louis Chastain (1707-aft 1756) and Mildred Archer.[1]

Research Notes

There are several Obediah Chastain's in the same time period. Please use caution when merging or sourcing.

This Chastain family likely moved to Tennessee between about 1826 and 1828. The older children's records indicate they were born in South Carolina between about 1810 and 1826. Then by 1829, the two youngest children were born in Tennessee. Father-in-Law William Kelly's Revolutionary War Pension file states that William Kelly moved his family to McMinn County, Tennessee, in about 1824 from Pendleton County, South Carolina.[5].

Obediah Chastain Jr., (d:1856) was enumerated with his mother, Jane (Kelly) Chastain, in 1850 in Gordon County, Georgia. Cherokee Claim form filed by one of Obediah Chastain Jr.'s descendants indicates Obediah Chastain Jr. was born about 1829 in "East Tennessee" and died in 1856 in Pickens County, Georgia.[3] There are about a dozen documents regarding business for Obediah Chastain, Jr. These were saved by family members and passed down. Most of the documents are dated 1853 through 1856 for transactions in Fairmount and Pickens County, Georgia. Fairmount is near the county line of Gordon and Pickens. This is an area where many of these Chastains remained for generations. Then a few are dated 1857 for his "widow" or "Mrs. Obediah Chastain". They can be viewed on his FamilySearch profile or at ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/7549429/person/-1073928661/facts.

In 1852, the following sons of Obediah Chastain Sr. (1790-1830) and Jane Kelly paid taxes in Gordon County District #24 Springtown, GM #1057;

All for poll tax, none were landowners.[6]

The name Obediah recurs in this family. David Marion Chastain was the father of Obediah 'Dide' Chastain (1851-1939). And Obediah B. 'Olie' Chastain (1875-1931) was the grandson of David Marion Chastain.

As a research note, there was another Obediah Chastain (1821-1907) who died in Cobb County, Georgia. He is of no known relation to the Chastains of Gordon and Pickens Counties. Oral history for this Obediah states his parents died when he was young, and he was thought to be reared by Rev. Allan Hamby and his wife Barbara of Rutherford. (Unverified Ancestry user story.)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Obediah by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Obediah:

Hi, you might be referring to Abraham Chastain ca 1750–1821? He reportedly was married to Mary Robertson. Here are my notes from his probate records, which make no mention of a son named Obediah.

Abraham Chastain dec'd Real estate on waters of South Tyger River in Greenville District, SC. Legal heirs of Abraham Chastain dec'd, who died intestate - To: Mary Chastain the widow; Joseph Chastain; William Few and Nancy his wife; Elisha Chastain; John Chastain; Christopher Elrod and Elizabeth his wife; the heirs of Emily Barret (James Reuben & Elisha Barret), Abraham Chastain; William Chastain; and heirs at law of Obedience Pace (her grand children by her only child Elizabeth Catherine deceased).

Hope this helps! If you have documentation to the contrary, please let me know.
