Biography

John Washington Chastain was born on November 22, 1870, in Paris, Edgar County, Illinois.^[1] He was the son of Newman Chastain and Hattie Hankins ^[2]

He married Emma Alice Brite on December 5, 1894, in Pierce City, Missouri.^[3] They had six children. 7 children 5 living in 1910.

They made their home in Pierce Twp., Lawrence County, Missouri in 1900, where he had a Shoe Repair shop, with Edgar W-5, Hester-2 and Emma's mother, Lucinda-65 in the home.^[4] They were in Barry, County, Missouri in 1910 where he was working as a Shoemaker in his shop. At this time Edgar-14, Hester-11, Elbridge-9, Robert-4, and Baby Ruby were in the home.^[5] In 1920, they were making their home in Webb City, Jasper County, Missouri on West Aylor Street with Robert-14, Ruby-10 and Emma Lou-3 in the home.l^[6]

John was a successful Businessman with a Shoe Store and Shoe Repair Shop. He had several rental houses, and bought, sold and traded real estate, and he had accumalated enought that he decided to go into real estate full time. They bought a small farm near Pea Ridge, Arkansas, and built his wife Emma's dream home. ^[7]

He died on June 25, 1938, in Albuquerque, Bernalillo, County, New Mexico, at the age of 67. He was buried in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Albuquerque, NM. Sec 8, lot 11.^[1]
