Born about 1548, Henry Cheke was son and heir of Sir John Cheke, tutor to Edward VI and secretary of state, and his wife, Mary Hill, daughter of Richard Hill or Hilles of London. [1]He succeeded his father in 1557 and was educated at Cambridge University, emerging with a Master of Arts degree in 1568. [1]
His first wife, whom he married in 1569, was Frances Radcliffe, daughter of Sir Humphrey Radcliffe of Elstow [1] and his wife, Isabell Harvey. She bore him 3 sons and 2 daughters. [1]
Henry first entered Parliament as member for Bedford in 1571 having been chosen along with Robert Hatley by the burgesses at a council meeting in accordance with the borough charter.[2] The following year he was returned again but this time the other member was Michael Hawtrey. [2]
In January 1585, he married Frances Constable,[3] at St Michael le Belfrey in York.[4] daughter of Marmaduke Constable of York, step-daughter of William More, lawyer of York. No children were born to the marriage.
Cheke died intestate, and was buried in York minster on the 23rd of June 1586.[5] He was succeeded by his son, Thomas.
According to the HOP reference, "Cheke had broken his neck by falling downstairs a few hours after he had ‘openly derided and scoffed at the Catholic martyr Francis Ingleby." The dates of their respective demises do not, however, line up exactly.
