Joel Cherry's Obituary:

Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.

Died, 10 January 1848, after a brief illness, Joel Cherry, in his 53rd year. He had been upwards of 40 years a member of the M. E. Church. He was of a retiring disposition, but firm, uniform, and consistent as a Christian; walking in the ordinances of the Church, and observing the precepts of the Gospel as a matter of principle. In 1809 he was appointed leader of Brushy Creek society and served in this capacity acceptably for two years. He then removed to Waxhaw Settlement, Lancaster; and was reappointed leader, alternatively serving the classes at Waxhaw and Rehoboth churches for a term of years, to the satisfaction of the membership. His hearing becoming impaired, he was constrained to relinquish his charge, nevertheless continued to walk humbly before God, and lived in the discharge of his Christian duties to his last illness. The even tenor of his way indicated that the absorbing consideration of eternal salvation, through faith in the mediation of the ever-blessed Son of God, was the governing motive of his life. By faith he lived, in faith he died, "looking for a "city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God". As death approached he informed his friends and family he had no apprehension of the future, - that he was going to heaven. His physician having retired, he desired him to be called, and affectionately shook hands with him. He then desired his servants to receive his last admonition, and taking each by the hand as they presented themselves at his bedside, enjoined upon them the necessity of preparing to meet him in heaven. He regretted that he had not personally an opportunity of taking a leave of all the preachers, and desired his family to tell them all farewell for him. He then directed the arrangement and disposition of his temporal affairs, and, at the solicitation of his family, gave repeated manifestations that his way was clear; until he composed himself to sleep, in which state he continued until he breathed his last without a struggle or a groan. The ministers of the gospel generally and of the M. E. Church especially, will long lament his loss; his house was generally their home, and his table generally spread for their accommodation at any time it was convenient for them to call. He has left a widow and twelve children to mourn his loss, only four of whom were present to witness his last scene. May they all meet hereafter in the heavenly city.

Signed: L

Note: The age listed in obituary is incorrect. He was born, re the Cherry family bible, 21 October 1768 making him 79 years old at the time of his death. His first son, John Myrick Cherry, was born 23 November 1803. If he had been born in 1795 as the obituary is referring then Joel would have been age 8 at the time of his first sons birth in 1803.
