Emily was born to Mary Freeman out of wedlock and christened at Therfield on 24 March 1833.[1]. Later that same year, Mary married James Cherry[2] and had five more children. James Cherry was named as her father on her marriage & death certificates in Queensland.

Written on her "Meridian's" ship documents, it states that Emily is 19, a Domestic Servant, her father has died, her mother is married to J Cherry, and her mother is onboard.
In 1854, Emily married Frederick William Dean. They had three children.
