Benjamin Cherry was a wealthy butcher and cattle dealer in the town of Hertford. He was elected Mayor of Hertford four times ( 1757, 1768, 1776, 1781).
He was most likely the son of another Benjamin Cherry (d 1750) also a butcher of nearby Sacombe.
1/12/1762 Benjamin Cherry married Sarah Green (1735-1810) at All Saints & St John Hertford (1/12/1762) and they baptised two sons: Benjamin (1765) and John (1774).
He died 13th November1785 aged 74, apparently by accident, by jumping into the moat at his Jenningsbury Farm, near Hertford Heath, leaving a fortune of £30,000. He is buried with his wife at the church of All Saints and St Johns in Hertford.
