Biography

"Our original immigrant ancestor was Edward Cherry, a great-grandson, as already stated, of Thomas Cherry of Maidenhead, England. He was past fifty when he came to Virginia in 1737; with him came his wife, Alice, at least three grown sons, probably other children; possibly married daughters and their husbands. Thomas, the oldest son, seems to have come over before the others, probably as a sort of advance agent to prepare for the coming of the remainder of the family." Fielder B Harris (1935) "The James Harris Mary Cherry Family"

Source: Marjorie Loomis Cherry: “According to T.K. Hartwell in ‘Shenandoah Pioneers’ (printed 1867), Alice and Edward Cherry, with three grown sons, Aaron, William and Thomas came from Antrim County, Ireland to Virginia. It is not known whether the sons brought wives with them, or married on reaching Virginia. About one-sixth of the State of Virginia was in Orange County until 1734, when Frederick County was taken out of it, and later Jefferson County was taken out of Frederick. It is possible that Alice and Edward left grown children in Ireland, but nothing can be learned on that. Neither do we know which man living in Antrim County, 1669, John or William, is the father or grandfather of Edward.” “1750: This indenture made the 18 day of Sept between George Moore of Frederick County, Province of Maryland, farmer, of the first part, and Thomas Cherry Senior of County and province aforesaid, witnesseth, that for and in consideration of one hundred pounds current money of Maryland - a tract of land called ‘Snowden’s Friendship’ lying in Frederick… . “1751: Edward is dead and Alice, his wife, is Administratrix May 12, with sureties Robert Renwick and Abraham Vanderpool. Appraisal by Westfale Peter, and Lowery Myers, due by Abraham Hite.” (Book I Vol 3 Augusta County Wills) From “Shenandoah Pioneers”, by T.K. Hartwell, 1867: “Edward Cherry came to Virginia in 1737 and settled on Cohangeroote River, along the west edge of what is now Jefferson Co. The town of Cherry Run in Berkeley County was named for the family. His wife Alice, was appointed administratrix of his estate on Aug. 10, 1751. Came to Virginia with his wife and three children in 1735-1737. First immigrant to America for this line. (NOTE - conflict with what was said about his son, Thomas, preceding his father to Virginia) The family’s first home was on the banks of the Cohangeroote, 10 - 12 miles north of Harper’s Ferry, VA (now WV). The land was deeded to Thomas, Sr.” From the James Harris - Mary Cherry Family tree by Fielder Bowie Harris, 1935: “Came to VA in 1737 and settled on the Cohangeroote River, along the west edge of what is now Jefferson Co. The town of Cherry Run in Berkeley Co was named for the family. His wife Alice was appointed administratrix of his estate on 10 Aug 1751.” “Came to Virginia with his wife and three children in 1735-1737. First immigrant to America for this line.” From “Roots of the Cherry Tree”, by Marjorie Loomis Cherry, Section A, pg 3: “Professor Fielder Bowie Harris of Lebanon, Ohio, searched extensively in the Orange County (now Jefferson Co.), W Va, Court Records for the documented father of Edward. He found a clear statement that that Edward and his cousin, David, were grandsons of Thomas Cherry, born 1629 in England who married 1650 in Scotland, and moved to Ireland soon after.” From “Shenandoah Pioneers”, by T.K. Hartwell, 1867: “The family’s first home was on the banks of the Cohangeroote River, ten to twelve miles north of Harper’s Ferry, VA (now W Va). The land was deeded to Thomas Sr.”
