Biography

This profile is part of the Mainwaring Name Study.

Amicia or Amice, is named as the daughter of Hugh II de Kevelioc, Earl of Chester in a charter which grants to Ralph Mainwaring (Radulfo de Meinilwarin), in marriage with Amicia, the service of Gilbert, son of Roger held for the service of two knights fees.[1]. The charter is dated to about 1180 or perhaps a few years earlier,[1] but definitely before 30 June 1181 when Hugh II died.

Amicia is mostly accepted as an illegitimate daughter of Hugh II, Earl of Chester[1] [2] His only known wife, Bertrade of Montfort, was married in 1169,[3] and if legitimate Amicia is thought to be too young to have married about 1180. Also she or her descendants aren't named amongst the heirs of her half-brother Ranulph de Blundeville, Earl of Chester, when he died without issue in 1232.[2][4]

Although not necessarily proof, Bertrade (Bertraya comitisse Cestrie) is a witness to the charter mentioned earlier without any indication that she is Amicia's mother.[1]

Children

With Ralph Mainwaring, Amicia had four children;

  1. Sir Roger Mainwaring, eldest son and heir;
  2. Randall Mainwaring of Great Warford;
  3. Bertred, wife of Henry de Audley (Alditelegh)[5]
  4. William Mainwaring
