Biography

Susanna (Chester) Hines was born in Bristol, England.

Susannah CHESTER.^[1] Susannah Chester was born in abt 1814 and was baptised at Temple Church in Bristol, Somerset England, to parents Joseph and Hannah CHESTER.

Susannah married John HINES at Bristol, Gloucestershire on 11 August 1839 at St John the Baptist Church.

In 1841 she can be found living with her husbands family and her daughter Mary, aged 1. The census suggests she was not born in Somerset. At that time The City of Bristol may not have been considered to be part of Somerset. The City borders the counties of Somerset and Gloucestershire.

By 1851 she is living with her husband and three children at Nailsea in Somerset, Mine side, she describes herself as a housewife. The children are noted as all being born in different places, Mary Ann aged born in Wraxell, James aged 6 born in Langford Somerset and Thos aged 3 in Burrington, also noted as being blind.

After John died in 1852 and her daughter Mary Ann went to Australia in 1859, Susan can be found in the 1861census, living in a lodging house at I Nelson Place, Clifton, Gloucestershire. She is now described as a dressmaker and milliner, and widow.

Family Stories have suggested that Susanna was French, perhaps a French actress. The fact that she took up dress and hat making after John died, might have been a French influence. Some researchers have suggested that being French may have been an explanation for being a Catholic, although there is no evidence that this was the case with Susannah.

By 1871 Susannah was living at Waterloo House in the village of Portishead, Somerset, aged 55. Her son Thomas is now also residing with her. In this census he is described as having been blind from birth.

Susannah died on 10th June 1880 at 10 Conduit Place, Bristol. Her death certificate indicates she died at 65 years of age from cancer of the uterus, and was the widow of John Hines, a carrier. The informant of the death was Ann Bryant, who also lived at 10 Conduit Place and was also present at the death.

The paternal and maternal lines are confirmed to the ancestral couple of Joseph Chester and Hannah Austin due to auDNA matches between six descendants on three different descendant lines to Veronica Williams , Unnamed DNA Coat, two grandchildren of Charlotte Slater Mills and a grandchild of Victor Chester Thornton. ^[2]
