Grace Chetwode, daughter of Richard Chetwode, Knt., and his second wife, Dorothy Needham,[1] was born about 1602 (aged 33 in 1635).[2] Richardson bases her birth year on her deposition in which she said she was 33 in 1635. Her father held lands in several counties and her birth location is not determined.[3]
Grace was a legatee in 1616 in the will of her aunt, Elizabeth Needham.[2]
Grace married Rev. Peter Bulkeley, of Concord, Massachusetts and Odell, Bedfordshire,[1] as his second wife, about April 1635.[2] Peter, born in Odell, Bedfordshire in 1583, was the son of Dr. Edward Bulkeley and Olive Irby.[2] Grace and Peter had one daughter and three sons:[4]
Richardson states that they "immigrated to New England in the Susan & Ellen in 1635, where they settled initially at Cambridge, Massachusetts."[2] However, Hotten shows that Grace sailed aboard the Elizabeth & Ann on 8 May 1635, and her husband Peter sailed the next day, 9 May 1635, aboard the Susan & Ellen.[6]
A tradition includes that on the voyage from England, Grace appeared to die. Against common practice, but in the absence of decay, her body was not committed to the deep and on the third day, she showed signs of life, and survived over thirty years.[7]
Peter Bulkeley died at Concord, Massachusetts on 9 March 1658/9. Grace moved to New London, Connecticut, where she died on 21 April 1669.[2][3]

Grace (Chetwood) Bulkeley is listed in Magna Carta Ancestry as a Gateway Ancestor (vol. I, pages xxiii-xxix) in a Richardson-documented trail, through her father, to Magna Carta Surety BaronWilliam Malet (vol. I, pages 437-443 CHETWODE). This trail was developed by the Magna Carta Project and approved in 29 January 2016 and was re-reviewed in March 2020. See the Magna Carta Trails on her father's profile to view the profiles on this trail.
She is also in a trail, through her mother, to surety baron Robert FitzWalter. This trail was badged in January 2023. See the Magna Carta Trails on her mother's profile to view the profiles on this trail.
See Base Camp for more information about Magna Carta trails. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".
Elizor/Eleazer is mentioned in the 1658 will of his aunt Abigail Chetwood. I have added details to his profile, none of the other children are mentioned by name
I give unto my nephew Elizor Buckley Twenty pounds to be paid unto
him Six yeares after my decease If he shall then bee in Life and if it shall please god
that he dye within the said six yeraes THen my will is that the Lagacy of Twenty pounds shall
goe to the bretheren and sisters of my said Nephew that shall be in life at the End of
the said six yeares to be paid unto them after the said six yeares is expired by Equall
I have come across an article that claims Grace Chetwood had a distant uncle, Reginald Fitz Urse, who was one of the four knights who murdered Thomas Becket in 1170. See , Craig, F. N., "Lady Millicent's Cat and the Bullers Inheritance" TAG 70:96 (1995) at p 98. https://www.americanancestors.org/DB283/i/13130/98/0
Reginald FitzUrse has a profile at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/FitzUrse-20 and WikiTree is showing the relationship if you check with the relationship finder. Grace is, according to WikiTree, 13th great-grandniece of Reginald, by two heavily overlapping routes.
Verified that a badged trail exists between Chetwood-1 and Malet-18, but Wodhull-44 is a problem (despite the conclusion that the line to Malet-18 is ok to go through this profile with {Uncertain Existence} research box). Please add {Magna Carta Project|needs=Re-review} to the profile. The project account for the Magna Carta Project will be added as a manager later this month to meet WikiTree guidelines (see Help:Project-Managed_Profiles). Give me a holler if you have any questions. ~ Liz, Magna Carta project member
In celebration of the recent 800th Anniversary of the Magna Carta, the Magna Carta Project is reviewing and enhancing all the profiles between American Gateway ancestors like Grace (Chetwood) Bulkeley, and William Malet, the Magna Carta surety from whom she descends. This profile is on the "trail" between the two and I look forward to any contributions we can make to this profile. Please let me know if you have any concerns.
