Biography

Michel Jean-Baptiste Chevalier dit Machar was born January 20, 1715 in Montréal, Quebec, New France. He was the son of Jean Baptiste Chevalier and Marie Françoise Alavoine. Machar died at his son's home in Détroit in 1774.


MICHAEL JEAN BAPTISTE (MACHAR) - (b. 20 Jan 1715) was at the Fort Duquesne battle in 1755. His daughter, Margurite Machard, married Jean Baptist La Borde dit Sans Regent on 21 Jan 1792 ; the family lived at Green Bay. Machar had two sons and a daughter, he died at his son's house in Detroit. The other son, Jean Baptiste, was a voyageur on the St. Peter's River in 1786-1787, and later settled on Lot #34 in East De Pere, Wisconsin, where he is burried with his wife, Marie Antonette (Marinette).

Three of their children are :

- Joseph married Lizette, a Menominee Indian woman. Two sons are Alexis and Joseph Jr. Joseph Jr. drew money as part-Menominee in 1849 and drew Pottawatomi money in 1833 for his children, Angelique, Josette, and Joseph. He also had a son who lived on the Menominee reservation as Joe Bart with his wife, PY A SISH.

- Bartelmi (died 1817) married Louise, daughter of WAU BA SISH (THE MARTEN) and had four children : Marinette (b. 1794 - d. 1865) who lived for short periods with Jean Baptiste Jacobs and William Farnsworth, having three children with each of them. (Marinette, Wisconsin is named after her.) ; Louise married Louis Morneaux ; Angelique was the first wife of Moses Hardwick ; Bart Jr. married PA KA MA SUT in 1855 and had three boys and two girls. One of his daughters, NAW KAY KAW WAW PAS had a son, George Clark. (A Bartelmi Chevalier married O PE TAH, a Chippewa Indian woman , on 20 Jan 1828.)

- Louis Pascal had several children in the Green Bay area, with a Chippewa woman named Josephte ; Jean Baptiste (b.15 Mar 1803) ; Achange (male) (b. 15 May 1800) ; and Josephte (b. 8 Sep 1807).
