Biography

James was born in 1923. He was the son of James Jackson Lenox-Conyngham Clark and Marion Chichester.

His father died in 1933.

He was educated at at Selwyn House, Broadstairs, and then Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.

On joining the Irish Guards, the regiment of his grandfather, in Omagh he began his year-long training at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, before receiving his commission as a second lieutenant. James fought in the Second World War where he was wounded.

He was Aide-de-Camp to the Governor-General of Canada between 1947 and 1949.

He married widow Moyra Maud de Burgh Morris (daughter of Brigadier Arthur de Burgh Morris and formerly the wife of the late Captain Thomas Haughton from Cullybackey) in 1959.

They had two children.

He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of County Derry between 1954 and 1975; he gained the rank of Major in 1960; he held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Unionist) for South Derry [Northern Ireland] between 1960 and 1972; he held the office of Chief Whip [Northern Ireland] between 1963 and 1967.

He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [North Ireland] in 1966; he held the office of Leader of the House [Northern Ireland] between 1966 and 1967; he was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1967; he held the office of Minister of Agriculture [Northern Ireland] between 1967 and 1969 and he held the office of Prime Minister of Northern Ireland between 1969 and 1971.

He was created Baron Moyola, of Castledawson in the County of Londonderry [U.K. Life Peer] on 20 July 1971, his title taken from the name of his family's estate.

He held the office of Vice-Lord-Lieutenant of County Derry between 1975 and 1993.

James lived at Largantogher, County Derry, Ireland and at Moyola Park, County Derry, Ireland.

He died in 2002 at the age of 79; he was the last surviving Prime Minister of Northern Ireland.
