Biography

James Cheek was born on 14 May 1760 in King and Queen, Virginia to parents Richard Cheek and Elizabeth Ryland.[1]

In 1830 he was living in Knox, Kentucky.[2]

Military

In June of 1776 he joined Captain William Drew's Virginia Company to fight in the Revolutionary War. Called out in Jan of 1777 and served on 5 monthly tours under Captains Ware, Campbell, Hill, Hoskins, and Coatney, and Colonel Nelson in VA Troops. enlisted in November of 1780 and served 15 days in Captain Eddings company of artillery. In Jan 1781 he moved to King William Co, VA. On 2/1/1781 he enlisted and served less than a month in the VA Troops. He enlisted again on 5/15/1781 and served as a Corporal in Captain John Quarles' VA Company. He was discharged 6/17/1781. Applied for his pension on 9/27/1832 while living in Greasy Creek, KY. He was issued Certificate No. 4244 on 1/19/1833 for pension at a rate of $25.96 per annum beginning on 3/4/1833a. His pension claim file number was S 10440. James Chick is quoted in the "Knox County Kinfolk in the Revolutionary War" and it was contributed by Jack D. Baker of 1217 West Hefner Road, Oklahoma City, OK 73114.

He died on 11 Nov 1845 in Knox, Kentucky.

He had at least one brother, William, who was living in Buckingham County, Virginia in 1832.
