Biography

Anne (Chickering) Metcalf immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Anne Chickering was born in England, daughter of Francis Chickering and Ann/Annis Fiske, of Suffolk, England who came to Dedham, Massachusetts by 1639. [1] [2] [3]

Her mother died at Dedham on December 5, 1649 [3], and her father married second, widow Sarah (___) Bowles. [4]

Ann married first Stephen Paine Jr. [1] on November 3, 1652 at Dedham, MA. [5][6] Stephen was born about 1629 at Great Ellingham, Norfolk, England son of Stephen Paine and Neele Adcocke, and came to New England with his parents in August, 1638 on the Diligent. [7]

On October 17, 1658, her stepmother Sarah, was appointed administrator of Francis Chickering's estate and was granted her dower. The division of the remainder of the estate, including house, lands, debts and goods, were to go the the five daughters, accounting for L100 already given to Stephen Paine, as part of his wife's portion. [8]

Anne's husband Stephen Paine Jr. was buried at Rehoboth, Massachusetts on January 24, 1677/8. [7] [9]

His estate was inventoried on May 16, 1678 and assessed at L585: 10:11. He left no will but eldest son Stephen presented the Plymouth Court with a written 'manifestation of his wishes in order of the disposal of his estate', naming the following: [10]

  • eldest son Stephen
  • second son John
  • third son Samuel
  • fourth son Nathaniel
  • fifth son Benjamin
  • daughter Rebecca, wife of Samuel Pecke
  • daughters Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah [10]


In her father-in-law Stephen Paine Sr's. will written on July 18, 1679, he left bequests to:

  • grandson Samuel Paine
  • grandson John Paine
  • grandsons Nathaniel and Benjamin, sons of son Stephen, deceased
  • daughter-in-law Anne Paine
  • grand daughters Elizabeth and Sarah [7]

Anne married second, Thomas Metcalf on December 2, 1679, as his second wife. [7] [9]

Her stepmother, Sarah (___) (Sibley) (Chickering) Bowles, wrote her will on June 21, 1681, naming her sons-in-law or their heirs, including Thomas Metcalf . [4]

Anne died on January 1, 1688 at Dedham, Massachusetts. [7] [6]

Stephen and Anne's youngest son Benjamin died about May, 1698 at Bristol, Rhode Island. He left L20 to his brother John Paine, with the remainder being divided among his siblings. In the final accounting on October 30, 1700, the remaining estate was divided among:

  • brother Nathaniel Paine, brother Stephen Paine. brother Samuel Paine
  • brothers-in-law Samuel Peck; Enoch Hunt; Jacob Pepper; Daniel Aldis [10]

Her husband Thomas, married for his third wife, widow Mehitable Savil. [11] Thomas died on November 16, 1702. [6]

  4. Mary born on August 11, 1659 [11: 5: 1659 [7]]; married Enoch Hunt on October 29, 1678. [9]
  5. Samuel born on August 12, 1662 [12: 5: 1662] [7]; married first, Anna Peck on December 16, 1685 [9]; married second Mrs. Abigail Frissell of Woodstock, Connecticut; he died at Woodstock on May 11, 1735. [10]
  6. Elizabeth born on October 27, 1664 [27: 8: 1664] [7] ; married Jacob Pepper of Roxbury on February 10, 1684/5. [9] [7]
  7. Sarah born on October 12, 1666 [9] [7]; died at Dedham on December 16, 1733; married Daniel Aldis on November 23, 1685. [13]
  8. Nathaniel born on December 20, 1667 [7] died on March 25, 1718; married Dorothy Chaffee on May 1, 1694. [9]
  9. Benjamin born on March 9, 1670 [9] [7]; died at Bristol, Rhode, Island about May, 1698. [10]
