Biography

Nathaniel Chickering was baptized at Wrentham, Suffolk, England on October 8, 1647, son of Simon Chickering and Prudence Unknown. [1] [2]

Nathaniel married first, on December 30, 1668, Mary Judson. Mary was born at Dedham, Massachusetts on September 20, 1647 [20 of the 8 mo. 1647] daughter of Samuel Judson and Mary (___) Aldrich. [3]

His wife Mary died at Dedham on January 27, 1669, shortly after their marriage. [3] Her father Samuel Judson had died at Dedham in 1657, leaving his estate to be divided into 4 parts, one each to his widow Mary, and to his three daughters, Mary, Sarah and Esther, when they reach age 18. [4] [5]

In 1670, Nathaniel filed a complaint against his mother-in-law, widow Mary Judson, for his deceased wife's portion of her father Samuel's estate. The court ordered the widow to pay Nathaniel L40 to make up for his late wife's share, in addition to what she had already received. [6]

He married second, Lydia Fisher on December 3, 1674 [3 of ye 10 mo 1674] at Dedham, Massachusetts, as his second wife. [3] [7] [8] Lydia was born at Dedham, Massachusetts on July 14, 1652 and baptized there on August 1, 1652, the daughter of Daniel Fisher and Abigail Marriott. [2] [3]

In the division of Lydia's father Daniel Fisher's estate, a petition was filed by Lydia's husband Nathaniel and her brothers Daniel, Amos, and John Fisher on February 27, 1683/4, indicating that they had come to an agreement on the division, excepting brother-in-law John Baker. On March 13, 1683/4, the court order the division to the heirs, including Nathaniel Chickering, in the right of his wife Lydia, who was granted 3 acres at Fowle meadow, 5 acres at Birch Plain, and on common right, in addition to moveables. [9] [2]

Nathaniel Chickering of Dedham was made a Freeman May 11, 1681. [10]

The family were of Dedham Island until just before her husband's death in 1694, when they removed to that section of Dedham that is now Dover, Massachusetts. [7] Nathaniel, by land grant and purchase had 100 acres there. [8]

Nathaniel died on October 21, 1694. [2] [3]

On April 27, 1699, widow Lydia Chickering and son Nathaniel Chickering, along with Ashael Smith and Simon Gay, posted bond of L200 as administrators of her husband Nathaniel's estate, who died intestate. [11]

His estate inventory, taken on December 13, 1700, was assessed at L185: 16: 10. [11]

Widow Lydia at some point removed to Needham, and in 1720 was a member of the newly established church of Reverend John Townsend. [7]

Lydia died at Needdham on July 17, 1737. [2] [12]
