He was the father of First Lady Sarah Childress Polk. He was a merchant and tavern-keeper. He served the town of Murfreesboro, TN as alderman and was postmaster from 1813 to 1817. He is buried in Cannonsburgh Village Cemetery in Murfreesboro. [1]
