Disputed Parents
Many sources list Valentine's parents as Margaret Littlepage and Henry Chiles. The more accepted listing is Henry"s brother John Childes, Sr. and his first wife, Elender. [2]
Circumstantial evidence for Valentine as a daughter of John and Elender (Webber) Chiles consists of land transactions with Elender's second husband, Edwin Hickman:
1 Oct 1745, Edwin Hickman of Albemarle County to Giles Tompkins of Spotsylvania County; £22 curr. 209-1/2 acres in Spotsylvania County; Chrisr. Tompkins, Henry Chiles 01 Oct 1745.[3]
5 Dec 1752, Giles Tompkins of Albemarle County and his wife, Valentine, to John Lewis of Spotsylvania County; £80 curr. 209 acres in Spotsylvania County, conveyed by Mary Abney, as by Deeds, 04 Nov 1735, to Edwin Hickman, and by said Hickman to said Giles Tompkins, as by Deeds, 01 October 1745; M. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Valentine by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Valentine:
I added information about deeds between Edwin Hickman and Giles to the section about Valentine's disputed parentage. I also changed the marriage locale to Spotsylvania (per County Records). I don't know why the story about them getting married in St. Peter's-New Kent got started, but no record of their marriage is there. Some Littlepages were mentioned in St. Peter's Parish Register though, and one reportedly married a Chiles.
Also, as others have noted, Valentine's birth date seems as much as two decades too early.
I wrote both of you private messages about Agnes. I agree with the Marie about the date of birth and death for Valentine. If I don't hear from either of you. I will research and correct it.
Thanks Jenny
I see a problem with Valentine Chiles born c1690 married Giles Thompson in 1738 and has about 11 children from 1739-1762. Would make her 70 years old with last child. Valentine should be born about 1720 - but then who are her parents??? Or is there more than one Valentine?
Also, as others have noted, Valentine's birth date seems as much as two decades too early.
