Mrs. Anne Chiles Ward was reared in eastern Virginia, where life was more gracious than on the frontier, and where the stores of the tobacco merchants were easily accessible, carrying newest London goods and fashions. She was a woman of great beauty, which is a cherished tradition among her descendants today. Her family of five sons and twin daughters, Anne and Agatha, was complete before she came into the Roanoke Valley, her youngest son, Henry, being a small child at the time. But like other members of her family, Anne’s life was tragically short, and she did not live to enjoy the handsome home which her husband built for her with so much care and thought. She was buried in the garden graveyard at River View, the home plantation of her brother Paul Chiles, who had died in 1761 and where her mother was also laid to rest.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Anne by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Anne:
There is some confusion about John Ward and Ann Chiles. Some families claim Ann Chiles married John Word. Campbell Cronicles say that John Ward married Sarah Lynch, daughter of founders of Lynchburg, Va, and had children with her, When she died he married Ann Chiles and had no children with her. How odd she married a John Word and then a John Ward. Confusing!
Hi pms, it appears that possibly there was a merge of two profiles of Anne Chiles that weren't actually duplicates. I'll add the names of this Anne Chiles' children to the profile. If anyone has sources for any of the other children, it would be great to add those sources to the profile of the child. Thanks so much, Gillian
Hello, I believe something has gone awry with the husbands for her. Currently has 3 John Ward's and 1 James Ward as husband. Can any of these be removed with confidence? Thank you, Teresa (WikiTree Arborist)
Chiles-4 and Chiles-526 appear to represent the same person because: The profile of Chiles-4 looked to be more completely sourced than the sources that I have been able to uncover. Mary
The merge should take place anyway. List the sources you have. Inconsistencies may be called out in Research Notes. The birthplace can be marked Uncertain until further collaboration clarifies it.
Chiles-4 and Chiles-526 appear to represent the same person because: This was a rejected merge, but I can't understand why. Same parents, same birthdate. How could they not be the same people?
Chiles-442 and Chiles-4 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate wife of Major John Ward - one of the profiles has a detailed biography, the other a find a grave link. A 4 year difference in DOB, but this is approximate, anyway.
The tombstone pictured at the Adam Ward Family cemetery reads: Major John Ward. Born 1708 Died 1816. Annie Childs Ward, Died 1765. I'd say this is pretty compelling evidence to support she is his wife.
