Biography

Alexander (Chisholm) Chisholm XIXth of Chisholm is a member of Clan Chisholm.

Alexander Chisholm, The Chisholm is the son of Alexander Chisholm, The Chisholm and unknown daughter Mackenzie. He married unknown daughter Mackenzie, eldest daughter of Roderic Mackenzie of Applecross. He was living in 1677.

By a deed of 1637 Lovat ceded to Alexander lands at Buntait (see Knf p 31) and at Mauld, near Struy (see Str p 01). ChisWrits 162/p 28

MacKenzie's 1891 History of the Chisholms recites a Chief named Angus, numbered XVIII. It is now established that he never existed; the name Angus is believed to be an error by a recording clerk for the name Alexander. See Notes and Queries Number IV of May 1977 at page 14 of the Society of West Highland and Island Historical Research.

In 1688 a caucus of Whig nobility displaced James II of England and VII of Scotland from the thrones of his ancestors and installed William III and Mary as joint sovereigns. William's mother Mary was a daughter of Charles I, who was beheaded by Oliver Cromwell and his revolutionaries, William III's wife was a daughter of James II. This change was not universally accepted, particularly in the Highlands which were still loyal to the Stuarts. Units of several regiments were ordered to besiege Erchless Castle where a number of Clansmen from that area were holding out for the Stuarts. In the event Erchless Castle succumbed and as MacKenzie's 1891 History of the Chisholms recites ".....a great quantity of provisions was secured".

Research Note

by Mark Sutherland-Fisher, Scottish Clans sub-project

The profiles for members of the Chisholm family between the 16th and 20th chiefs are confusing and based on competing sources. They need checked by an expert on the Chisholm family who may need to determine whether the “daughter of Mackenzie of Gairloch” marriage did exist and that the children have been attributed to the correct mother in each generation.

According to the History of the Chisholms, Alexander Chisholm XIV of Comar had three children. John Chisholm XX of Comar, Theadore Chisholm who started his own line and Jean Chisholm who married Sir Kenneth Mackenzie (pages 56 - 58).

Chisholm-1529 and Chisholm-646 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same man and a consequential merge from other merges
