Biography

Norman, Sr. was born in 1830 between January and June since he is listed in the 1830 census in Rankin county, Mississippi. His family lived in Rankin county, Smith county and Scott county during his youth. He married Catherine Williams around 1850, probably in Scott county, MS. In 1860, he was issued 37.66 acres of land in Scott county. On January 8, 1862, he is listed as present on Company Muster Roll for Co. G, 46th Regiment, MS Volunteers. On February 28, 1862 he is listed on Company G, 6th Battalion MS Volunteer as a private stationed at Trenton, MS. On May 3, 1863, he is listed as Prisoner of War, captured by the 3rd Div.17th Army Corps at Port Gibson, MS. The next day, May 4, he was sent under escort to be delivered to the officer in charge of prisoners at Grand Gulf, MS. He arrived at the military prison in Alton, Illinois on May 18, 1863. On July 4, 1863, he surrendered at Vicksburg, MS. Seven days later on July 10, he was paroled at Vicksburg. On July 15 at Camp Lee, Richmond, VA his name appears on Muster Roll of a detachment of paroled and exchanged prisoners. On May 4, 1865 he surrendered at Citronelle, Mobile, Alabama and was paroled 5 days later in Meridian, MS. He died in 1879 at Raleigh, Smith county, MS.

Buried in an unmarked grave at Old Mount Nebo Cemetery, Sylvarena, Smith County,Mississippi, USA. He is listed as CO. C. 46th INF. CSA.
