Biography

Jared Chittenden was the son of William Chittenden and Elizabeth (Fosdick) Chittenden. He was born in Guilford, Connecticut on May 3, 1756.[1]

In 1775, at the age of 20, Jared enlisted in the Revolutionary Army as a Private in Captain Samuel Mansfield's Company, Battalion of Artillery, that later was renamed the 2nd Regiment of Artillery. The Company was commanded by Colonel John Lamb. Jared first served as Gunner, then Bombadier, until he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.[2] Jared mustered out in November of 1783. It is said that he went deaf firing artillery during the Battle of Yorktown.

Jared first married Elizabeth Lusk (b. 5 Oct. 1766). Together they had nine children, seven of whom survived early childhood. Elizabeth died in 1803 at the age of 37.[3]

Thomas Angell. 4) Sally, b. 10/13/1792. 5) Rev. William, b. 05/25/1794. 6) Homer, b. 12/16/1795, m. Margaret Trowbridge. 7) Virgil, b. 08/30/1797, m. Julia Curtiss. 8.) Harriet, b. 06/20/1799, d. 02/25/1800. 9) Clarissa, b. 02/27/1801, d. 06/05/1803.[4]

Jared married second, Anna Douglass (b. Sept. 19, 1783). Jared and Anna moved from Connecticut to Whitestown, New York. They had ten children together, making Jared father to a total of nineteen children, most of whom survived.[5]

Carter. 14) Harriet, b. 10/12/1812, d. 04/11/1825. 15) Mary C., b. 01/02/1815, d. 09/14/1834. 16) Jared, b. 12/07/1817. 17) George W., b. 02/03/1820. 18) Eunice Jane, b. 05/08/1822. 19) James D., b. 10/06/1824.[6]

Jared died on April 2, 1828 in Whitestown, New York. He was 72 years old. Jared is buried at Hillside Memorial Cemetery and Park in Central Square, New York. His wife, Anna, lived another 23 years. She died on December 30, 1851, aged 68.

Jared and Elizabeth’s eldest son, Thomas Cotton Chittenden, became a U.S. Congressman in the 26th and 27th Congress, serving for New York from 1839-1843
