Biography

John Chittenden was born in the New Haven Colony to William and Joanna Sheaffe Chittenden about 1642. His parents had emigrated to America in 1639 in the company of Reverend Henry Whitfield aboard the St. John, commanded by Captain Russell. William Chittenden was a founder of Guilford and a signer to the "Guilford Covenant."

John married Hannah Fletcher, daughter of John Fletcher and Mary Ward Fletcher, in Guilford, Connecticut in 1665. They had children John, Elizabeth, Joseph, Gideon, Abel and Lydia Chittenden.

John acquired land in 1667: "Nathan Bradley hath sold and alienated his house, house lot and orchard, 2 acres, to John Chittenden.." House was deeded by John in 1712 to son Abel Chittenden.

A list of Freemen was drawn up in Guilford in 1669 by the constable and townsmen at the order of the court. John Chittenden's name was included.

John Chittenden died about 1715.
