Solomon Chittenden was born in 1757, probably in Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut. He was the son of Nathaniel Chittenden and Mehitable (Beebe) Chittenden.
Solomon was a Private in the Revolutionary War for six years. He enlisted in 1776 under Lieutenant Dee of Colonel Webb's 9th Connecticut Regiment. In 1781, the 9th was merged with the 2nd Connecticut Regiment and the merged companies were renamed the 3rd Connecticut Regiment. In the 3rd Regiment, Solomon served under Caleb Heman Swift of Connecticut. The 9th Connecticut Regiment saw action at Setauket (1777), Rhode Island (1778), and Springfield, New Jersey (1780). The reformed 3rd Connecticut Regiment saw action at the New York Campaign, the Battle of Brandywine, the Battle of Germantown, and the Battle of Monmouth. The regiment was furloughed and then disbanded in 1783.
In June of 1785, Solomon married Susannah Sanford, the daughter of Joseph and Mehitabel (Clark) Sanford. They had several children. Talcott lists only three by name (Joseph, Sanford, and Susannah), plus one unnamed daughter. Other sources name the children as follows:
