François Gesseau Chouteau is the son of Jean Pierre Chouteau and Brigite (Saucier) Chouteau. The son of fur trader and a member of one of the earlier settlers of St. Louis, François learned his father's trade in his youth. Traveling up the Missouri River from St. Louis, he set up a trading post in what is present day Kansas City, Missiouri.
On July 12, 1819, François married Berenice (aka Bernice) Menard, who was born, in 1801 across the Mississippi River from his family, in Kaskaskia, Ilinois, the daughter of Pierre and Therese (Godin).
