Biography

Henry Chown was a son of Charles and Joan Chown of Rockbeare in Devon. He was baptised there on 7 April 1702.^[1]

Henry Chown married Ann Cookney at Holy Trinity Church in Exeter on 16 May 1727 ^[2] They lived at first at Rockbeare, where they baptised three children and then in Exminster parish where they baptised four more, starting in 1735.

Their home in Exminster was a farm called Spurways. The house still exists. [Spurways Farmhouse, Listed Building]

He died in 1770 and was buried at Exminster on October 29th.^[3] He had made a will in 1765. Unusually for a Devon will, a copy survives, among the deeds of Spurways, which are at the Devon Heritage Centre.^[4]
