WESLACO - Helen Alice Christensen Voigt Veches, 77, of Weslaco, died on May 6, 2008.

She was born in Rochester, Minn., on May 23, 1930, the fourth of five children of Arthur Christensen and Helen Gorman Christensen. She grew up, attended school and raised four children in Austin, Minn., with her husband of 49 years, Eugene "Bud" William Voigt. Helen was a faithful member of Christ Episcopal Church, where she served on the vestry and taught Sunday school. She was a dedicated mother who returned to school after raising her children, earning an Associate of Arts degree in Nursing from what was then Junior College, now Austin Technical College. She continued her education, going on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Summa Cum Laude from Winona State College in 1981 and attending graduate school at the University of Minnesota. She taught nursing at Austin Technical College and Winona State College and worked at several southern Minnesota nursing homes and hospitals, including Methodist Hospital in Rochester at St. Olaf Hospital in Austin. She also worked for the Mower County Health Department.

After the death of her husband, she moved to Pharr, Texas, where she was an active resident of Tropic Star Park. She earned a reputation as a resident healthcare expert who frequently helped her neighbors obtain medical care. She volunteered in local health clinics, enjoyed painting, gardening and sewing, and loved dancing. In Texas, she met Gordon Veches, whom she married in 2003. She is survived by Veches, of Weslaco; her children, Patricia Hughes and husband, Paul, of Pacific Palisades, Calif.,; Rhonda Montgomery and husband, Michael, of Milwaukee, Wis.; Terry Voight and wife, Wendy, of Jordan, Minn.; and Steven Voight and wife, Karen Southwell, of Tocoma, Wash.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Other survivors include a sister, Dorothea Christensen of Las Vegas; brother, Arthur Christensen, of Valencia, Calif.; and sister-in-law, Mary Christensen, of Juniper, Fla.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 9, 2008, at 10 a.m. at John Knox Village Chapel in Weslaco. Officiating the service will be Father Richard T. Speer of Grace Episcopal Church of Weslaco. Interment will be held in Austin, MN at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.
