Notes

Note N223Accounts of the early part of the life of James Christie are difficult to document. According to oral family history, as recorded in "Biographical History of Hendricks County, Indiana, 1895", p. 1028, James is the only child of the original founder of the family in America (name unknown) and a "lady of refinement" from Philadelphia. "James Christie, when quite a young man, enlisted in the Continental army and served seven years, or during the entire period of the Revolutionary war. He married on the James river, in Virginia, Sarah Lemon, and settled in Franklin county, Va., where he lived until 1803, when he moved with all his family to Lincoln county, Ky., and the next year to Shelby county, where he taught school until his death, which occurred at the home of his son, Israel." A similar account appears in the 1914 edition of Biographical History of Hendricks County, Indiana, p. 464, where James (again after seven years of alleged service) "married Sarah Lemond and settled in Franklin county, Virginia, on the James River, where he lived until 1803."
According to Virginia Christie Barlow (daughter of Ezra Christie, ggdaughter of James), her mother has written the following information on the first page of her copy of the William Christie 1914 family history: "The first Christie in America was killed in an Indian War when his son (James) was 9 years old. The family home was near Culpepper Court House, Culpepper County, Virginia."
According to a "Boston Transcript" entry, 5/3/1916, 5491: William Christie came to the colonies in the early 1750's and settled in Lancaster County PA where he died leaving his property equally to his wife and son. James sold his share while underage to enlist.
Portions of this account are clearly incorrect, or exaggerated. Neither Franklin County nor Culpeper County Virginia are on the James River. James did serve in the Revolution, as a private in the Virginia militia, for a total period of 16 months and 24 days, starting in 1777. This service is documented in his pension claim, W. 9892. In this claim he states that he was born in Lancaster County, PA on August 16, 1758. He first enlisted in the Virginia militia from Pittsylvania County, VA in May, 1777. After his final discharge in the winter of 1980/81 he moved to North Carolina, from there to Franklin County, Virginia, from there to Lincoln County, Kentucky and from there to Shelby County, KY where he was living at the time of his pension claim.
His wife, Sarah Christie, in her subsequent application for widow's pension, September 10, 1838 in Shelby county, KY, states that she was married to him 20th day of March 1781 or 1782 in Orange County, VA and that her husband died March 8, 1837. She says that the Bible records of her family have been burned. A record leaf is filed with the following: James Christie was born on August 16, 1756, Sarah Christie was born April 19, 1762. Another scrap of paper filed with the pension application states that they were married in North Carolina about 1782.
I have been unable at this point to find any land records documenting the presence of James or his family in Culpeper County, Franklin (or Henry) County, or Pittsylvania County. I have been unable to find a record of the marriage of James and Sarah in Orange County, or in Franklin or Henry or Pittsylvania counties, or in Orange County NC. I did find a record of the marriage of James' oldest daughter Mary to Evan Miles in Franklin Co, VA on August 4, 1800; James was present as surrogate at this wedding.
James does appear on the Franklin Co., VA Personal Property Tax Books 1786-1803 (microfilm reel 133, Virginia State Library and Archives) for the years 1787-1802, inclusive. He owned no cattle or slaves; for most years he had one horse. The last recorded entry is April 10 (?), 1802; this is consistent with the story that the family moved to Kentucky in 1803.
I found no Christies in Shelby Co. KY in the 1810 census. Israel and William Christie appear in the 1820 census.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

This is my direct line. There may have been some variation in the spelling on early records, but Christie is definitely the correct version. There does seem to be some Lemon/Lemmon variation as well, but there are a number of grandsons and great-grandsons with the first or middle name spelled Lemmon so that is what the family considers to be correct.

Hi! The MatchBot merge between Christie-1068 and Christy-181 looks to be appropriate but more research is

needed to determine which is the correct spelling of the last name. If you think the research will take longer than 30 days, you might want to postpone the merge by setting it to an unmerged match. If you need help researching it, post a message to G2G Christie and Christy. Before merging these though, the parents will need to be merged and the correct LNAB confirmed. The same goes for the Last name on birth for the wife and the children as there may be a discrepancy either Christie or Christy for the children, and Lemmon or Lemon for the wife. ~ MatchBot MP (MatchBot Monitors Project)
