William Christie, his wife Mary and their young daughter Jessie arrived in New Zealand in May 1857 off the ship Nourmahal. He worked as a blacksmith. He joined the goldrush to Gabriel’s Gully where he had some success in finding gold and later built the Caledonian Hotel on the corner of Walker and Hope Streets, Dunedin in partnership with Alex Ledingham. He was the licensee from 1862 – 1869 and he also ran a grocery store next to the hotel from 1865. The Caledonian Hotel was sold in 1869 and the family took up farming at Warepa in the Clutha District, south of Dunedin, in South Otago. The mixed crop and livestock farm was named ‘Keithmore’ and as an innovative farmer, he became a prominent figure in the local community.
