Charles Chrystie was born in the small village of Ordiquill (sometimes spelled 'Ordiquhill') in the County of Banffshire and appears to have lived there all his life.[1] Charles married Mary Chrystie in 1772. They are said to have had nine children, although to date evidence has only been found for four. Charles died in 1799.
A list of common names[14] contains no occurrences of the name 'Chrystie' in Banffshire in 1841, but 'Christie' appears ranked number 53, with 372 occurrences. It is therefore likely that both spellings could apply to members of the same family. Some sources used in this profile use 'Christie' and others 'Chrystie'. The Christie surname [15] is a patronymic, said to mean either 'Son of Christian' or 'Son of Christopher'[16] and most commonly occurred in Peebleshire, Argyle and Aberdeen.[17]
The fact that the family's birth and marriage details are recorded in the Old Parish Registers rather than the Catholic Church Registers gives some indication of their political leanings as well as their religious orientation.
There is no information available about Charles' parents' or siblings' occupations, so no inferences can be drawn about their lifestyles. They do not appear in the Farm Horse Tax Rolls[18], the Hearth Tax records[19], the Horse Tax Rolls[20] or Male Servant Tax Rolls [21], which would suggest that the Chrystie family might have been of moderate means.

Scotlands People Old Church Registers records the death of Charles Christie in Kirkcaldy in 1780 and another Charles Christie in Currie in 1790, but the locations make it unlikely that either record belongs to this person. Expanding the date range does not result in additional relevant sources.
Other Notes
No official record has been found of Charles Chrystie's death, but other sources suggest that he died in 1799 [12]
The birth name of Charles' wife was also Chrystie which, given that the name was not at all common in the area, raises the question of whether a mistake has been made. However, the sources located all appear to confirm that she was, indeed, Mary Chrystie / Christi
