Biography

Flag of Scotland
Native of Banffshire, Scotland

James Chrystie was born on April 15, 1733 in Ordiquhill, Banffshire, Scotland.[1] His parents were George Chrystie and Anna Elder. Frances Groome described Ordiquhill in his Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland (1882) as

"a parish of Banffshire, to the N containing Cornhill village, ½ mile SSE of Cornhill station in Fordyce parish, this being 8½ miles SW by W of Banff."[2]

James married Isobel Chisolm on June 19, 1768 in Fordyce, Banffshire, Scotland,[3] possibly at the Kirk of St. Talorgan’s (now in ruins and a Category A monument). The newer kirk was founded in 1804 and is presently a café (2021).[4] The kirk in nearby Cornhill was not founded until 1844.[5]

Together James and Isobel had 12 children:

  1. Janet Chrystie[6]
  2. John Christie[7]
  3. Isobel Christie[8]
  4. James Christie[9]
  5. George Christie[10]
  6. Charles Christie[11]
  7. Margaret Christie[12]
  8. William Christie[13]
  9. Alexander Christie[14]
  10. Jean Chrystie[15]
  11. Joshua Christie[16]
  12. Mary Christie[17]

He died on 14 January, 1792 in Ordiquhill, Banffshire, Scotland.[18] James may have been buried at St. Talorgan. However, no gravestone exists, through there are later Christies buried in the old churchyard, the earliest burial of which was in 1834.

Research Notes

There was another James Christie who died on 24 August 1790 in Ordiquhill. Until this James can be identified, which birth date is correct will need to be changed.

Chrystie-3 and Christie-382 appear to represent the same person because: Birth date and parentage the same.
