Vito Alfio[1] Ciancimino is born April 2 1924[2] in Corleone, the son of Giovanni[3] Ciancimino and Pietra Martorana, who married in 1922.[4]
Vito is a Christian Democrat politician best known for his role in the Sack of Palermo. In 1970, he is elected mayor of Palermo.
Several sources note that Vito's father, a barber, lived in the United States, where he worked as an interpreter, before WWII. He returned and ran a barber shop in Corleone.
Vito is elected to Palermo city council for the first time in 1956, along with Salvo Lima. Vito was "thin, coarse, and abrasive," and "weaselly" with "slicked-back hair, and a dark pencil moustache."[5]
Vito's mafia membership is considered an "open secret". "Many mafiosi were part of his circle of friends and business partners, among them the capo Carmelo La Barba (Palermo’s powerful boss), Angelo Di Carlo, and Carlo Antonio Sorci, who with Vito’s spouse founded a construction firm with mafia-tainted funds." Vito's wife Epifania Silvia Scardino is a shareholder in the corrupt bank, ISEP, in 1963, along with Angelo di Carlo.[6] Vito's son, Giovanni, is also implicated.[7]
Vito and Epifania have five children: Giovanni, Sergio, Roberto, Luciana, and Massimo.
Vito dies at age 78, while on house arrest.
