Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Jane (Claiborne) Brereton was a Virginia colonist.

Thomas Brereton married twice, first to Jane Claiborne the daughter of landowner, merchant and Secretary of State Col. William Claiborne and his wife Elizabeth Boteler. In 1657, Mrs. Jane Claiborne, spinster, inherited 1,450 acres in Northumberland County, Virginia from her father Co. William Claiborne [ref: 10 Feb 1657; p147 (215)]. William Claiborne is named as Jane's father and identified by the deed as Secretary of the Colony. This indicates that Jane was unmarried in 1657. Her marriage to Thomas Brereton is proved by the sale of the same parcel of land in 1665 to William Widdy, whose is assigned the property by Col. William Claiborne, Capt. William Claiborne and Thomas Brereton who "...marryed the sd. Jane & then likewise confirmed by order of the Govr. &c. died with there present..." [re: 14 Oct 1665; p422 (495)]. The sale of this property may indicate that Jane had died by this date. Jane was dead by 1671, when Thomas Brereton makes several detailed and complicated deeds of gifts in preparation for his marriage to the widow Graciana Span.

"Jane Claiborne, born about 1638, married before May 1661 to Thomas Brereton. On 10 Feb. 1657/8 Mrs. Jane Claiborne, Spinster, was issued a patent for 1450 acres in Northumberland County which was later assigned to Capt. John Whitty by Col. William Clayborne, Capt. William Clayborne and Thomas Brereton "who married said Jane." She died before May 1671 when Brereton had married Grace, widow of Richard Span, by whom he had a son Henry. Issue: Thomas Brereton, Elizabeth Brereton"[1]
