Caution: Thomas' cousin was also named Thomas Clapp. He was born in 1705 in Scituate and also became a minister.

Biography

Thomas Clapp graduated from Harvard in 1722, and was recruited to Windham, Connecticut in1726 as the successor to Rev. Samuel Whiting, Mary's father.

Thomas served as Windham's minister until he was asked to be president of Yale College in 1739. Not wanting to lose him, the people of Windham complained to the point that the matter was referred to an ecclesiastical council. When Thomas finally accepted the position at Yale in 1740, the State of Connecticut actually reimbursed the town for the loss of its well-loved minister.
