Joan Clapp born 1638 in New Jersey, died 1681 New York. She was the daughter of John Clapp and Joan Willis. She was married June 16, 1655/6 Medfield, Norfolk, MA to John Elston.[1] [2] [3]
There don't appear to be many sources for Joan Clapp, all sites come back to the Elston Family in America by James Strode Elston[4]. The context of this entry in The Elston Family in America is that the author is considering "other men of similar names [to that of John Elston or John Hellson] that have been found and investigated until either (1) no more information was found or (2) it appeared that they could not have been the ancestor of the Woodbridge Elstons." The entry itself is "John Ellis, 1646-1716 lived in Medfield and Midway. Without special investigation he appears to have been the husband of Joanne, an interesting possibility until we find that he married Joan Clapp Jan 16, 1655."
The Joan Elston (formerly Clapp) is given in this profile as the daughter of John Clapp and Joan (Willis) Clapp. In the bio and comments for the profile of John Clapp, it has been established that (1) John Clapp mentioned no children of his own in his will, and that accordingly, Joan (Clapp) Elston should be removed as a child of John Clapp, and (2) that after John Clapp's death, his widow, Joan (Willis) Clapp married John Ellis/Ellice,[5] an individual distinct from John Elston.

"Just to illustrate some of the other men of similar names [to that of John Elston] that have been found and investigated until either (1) no more information was found or (2) it appeared that they could not have been the ancestor of the Woodbridge Elstons, some of the possibilities are mentioned.
"John Eles Died in Newbury, Nov. 23, 1653. There were numerous men by the names of Ellis, Elice, etc. in northeastern Massachusetts. John Ellis, 1646-1716, lived in Medfield and Midway. Without special investigation he appears to have been the husband of Joanne, an interesting possibility until we find that he married Joan Clapp Jan. 16, 1655."
Connecting Joan Clapp to John Elston requires liberal correlation of 'Ellis', or 'Elice' (as given in some accounts of this marriage) with Elston. While the Elston name has appeared as Elsten, Elstone, Alston, Elson, Ellison, and Helson, all of these share the 'n'-based ending. Most of these alternate spellings occur in records where the principal person appears as Elston in other records that are clearly linked to the same person - for example, the John Elston of Salem, MA and Wells and Saco, Me who arrived on the Winthrop fleet in 1630 and who is recorded in Winthrop's journal as having been rescued from an overturned bark after a storm in July 1631, is almost certainly the same person as the John Helson of Wells and Saco, ME, whose son John (Helson in one record, Elston in another) married Joanne Waddock/Warwick, as is argued in more detail in EFIA, pp. 28-29.
A careful reading of EFIA (p. 39, paragraph 3) shows that author James Strode Elston was apparently not willing to make the connection between John Elston and John Ellis/Elice.
This is not to say that the two (Elston and Elice) could not be the same (especially considering that there is no known record of what happened to the John of the Winthrop fleet), but using the above source (Elston Fami[l]y in America by James Strode Elston 1942, p30, chap 4), does not seem to be in support of a marriage of Joan Clapp to John Elston (of either Salem or of Woodbridge).
