Biography

Joan de CLARE/
Joan GAMAGE[1]
Birth: ABT 1175/6 Pembroke, Pembroke, Wales

Research Notes

Godfrey Gamage of Monmouth, Wales is "said to have married Joan, daughter of Richard de Clare (Strongbow)".[2]

This G2G post notes only four known children of Richard "Strongbow" - none named Joan. This profile was detached in April 2015 from the profiles for Richard "Strongbow" de Clare (abt.1130-abt.1176) and Aoife (MacMurrough) de Clare (abt.1145-aft.1187).

Detached Profiles: Prior to 26 May 2023, this profile was attached as wife of Godfrey (Gamage) de Gamaches (1176-1253) - a conflated profile that has since been corrected - and mother of Godfrey de Gamage (abt.1196-1253) and Payne de Gamage (1211-). These profiles have all been detached.

Isaac, the Joan de Clare above was a non existent person, a creation of the Stradling Family of Glamorgan in the work that they commissioned in the Elizabethan times, "The Winning of Glamorgan." In this work, the Stradling Family claimed ancestry from one of the reputed twelve knights who accompanied Robert fitzHamon in the conquest of Glamorgan. Godfrey is about the eighth or ninth husband she is reputed to have married. Carol

We have a source on this page, saying she's the daughter of Strongbow. But we don't have her connected. Is she actually the daughter of Strongbow, or some other demonstrable Clare (etc) or is this perhaps a non-existent person?
