Sir Gilbert (Clare) de Clare was killed in Action during the First War of Scottish Independence at the Battle of Bannockburn.
Gilbert de Clare, 9th Earl of Gloucester, 7th Earl of Hertford, son and heir of Gilbert de Clare and his wife Joan Plantagenet, and great-grandson of Gilbert de Clare the Magna Carta Surety, was born at Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, England, May 10th (or 11th), 1291.[1]
m. Maud de Burgh 29 September 1308 at Waltham Abbey, Essex, England. They had a son, John.[1]
appointed Regent of England in 1311 and 1313 while King Edward II was in foreign lands.[1]
Gilbert died leading leading a fierce attack on the Scots at the Battle of Bannockburn 24 June 1314, and he was buried at Tewksbury Abbey at his father's right hand.[1]
