Hawise de Clare was the daughter of Magna Carta surety baron Richard de Clare, Knt., 3rd Earl of Hertford (styled Earl of Clare) and Amice of Gloucester.[1][2] Her date and place of birth are unknown and are estimated.
She married Magna Carta surety baron Geoffrey de Say, Knt.,[2] before 1215.[1][3] They had three sons:
William, Knt., son and heir, born before 1209 (of age in 1230), died before 12 February 1271/2, married first to Sibyl ____ (said to be daughter of John Marshal) and second to Mary ____[1]
John, Knt., adult by 1242/3, married before 1242/3 to ____ de Wauton, daughter and heiress of John de Wauton[1]
Her husband, Geoffrey de Say, died while serving in Poitou on 19 August 1230 and was buried at the Hospital of St. Mary in Dover, Kent.[1] About 1235, she and her son William jointly issued a deed regarding property in Edmonton, Middlesex.[1][4] This seems to be the only known record explicitly identifying the wife of Geoffrey de Say, the Magna Carta surety, though it has also been noted that Geoffrey held land of the Earl of Clare in free-marriage.[4] Hawise's date and place of death are unknown.

Hawise de Clare was the daughter of a Magna Carta surety, the sister of another, and the wife of another. She and her husband were the ancestors of about 38 pre-1700 Colonial gateways.
See Base Camp for more information about Magna Carta trails. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".
