Thomas was the son and heir of William Clarell of Aldwark (born about 1340; died before 15 January 1379/80) and Elizabeth (died after 1389), daughter of William de Reigate (or Reygate) of Steveton, York.[1][2][3] Three children were born to this marriage.[3] Thomas's birthdate has been estimated as having occurred around 1365, assuming a 25 year generational interval between father and son.
Thomas married Matilda (or Maud), daughter of Nicholas Montgomery, Knt. (died 1424), of Cubley and Marston Montgomery, Derbyshire, and Margery (or Margaret), daughter of Godfrey Foljambe, Knt.[1][2][3] Their marriage produced the following issue:
Matilda died intestate before 17 March 1456/7, when her son John was granted administration of her estate.[1][7][8] John was her only surviving son, as both Thomas and Robert (see research note 1) had predeceased their mother.[7][8]
In 1430, Thomas, representing Yorkshire, was one of many prominent men from the counties of England, who were persuaded by Crown-appointed commissioners to lend money to Henry VI to finance the King's April voyage to France. In what proved a failed attempt to bring a hasty conclusion to the wars, the Crown, nonetheless, had provided surety for repayment to the lenders on the octaves of Martinmas.[9]
The will of Thomas Clarell, dated 20 November 1441, expressed his wish to be buried in Austin Friars at Tickhill, Yorkshire, and specified that his executors, Matilda, sons John and Robert, Thomas Clarell vicar of Leeds (see research note 2), Richard Bete rector of Smeaton, and William Arrowsmith chaplain, were to receive additional personal property not assigned in the will.[7] The will was proved 20 June 1442, following Thomas's drowning in the River Don on 1 May 1442.[1][2][7][8]
1. Thomas's son Robert Clarell made his will the Sunday before 28 August 1446, the feast of St. Augustine the Doctor, where he requested that he be buried in the Friary-church near Tickhill. In his will, he left almost everything to his mother, Matilda, which seems to include his horse, saddle and bridle, boots, spurs and sword, and 40s. for his mortuary. Robert's will was proved on 17 October 1446.[7]
2. Thomas Clarell, the vicar of Leeds, named in the will of the Thomas of this profile, may have been a younger brother of Thomas Clarell. On 19 December 1428, the vicar was installed at the Kelham rectory in Nottinghamshire, on the presentation of Welbeck Abbey. This he exchanged with James Baguley for the vicarage of Leeds, to which he was instituted Nov. 8, 1430. The vicar, founder of a chantry at St. Catherine's altar, died in 1469.[7]
